About us
Who we are
The West Indies Community Club of Danbury was formed on September 7th, 2002, and incorporated in 2003.
The idea for the club was conceived and initiated by Mr Earl Egbert, then a husband and father of school-aged children, who noticed that the culture of the small West Indian immigrant population in Danbury seemed to be on the verge of disappearing, completely obscured. The children were adopting the ways, language, and music of the dominant culture and forgetting their roots.
Mr Egbert thought that a club like this could help preserve the distinct West Indies culture and values and pass them on to the youth, while enriching their lives and helping them grow into upstanding citizens who coexist and contribute to the wider Danbury community.
We now run shelter homes, schools and a reasonable mess that helps such needy young people. We also have our helpline offices spread throughout the country so one can approach us anytime they need help.
Our approach
We have an executive committee composed of hardworking, upstanding members of the community.
- President: Earle Egbert
- Secretary: Denise Robinson
- Asst Secretary: Dorrett Lawrence
- Treasurer: Maureen Jones
- Public Relations Officer: Charlotte Abrahams
We started with seven dedicated members – some of whom now serve on our executive body – but our membership now stands at twenty and continues to grow.
- We hold our meetings every Sunday at the American Legion Club in Danbury at 5:30 pm.
- The membership fee is $35.00.
We urge members of the Danbury West Indies community to join our club to learn more about our culture, grow with us, and help us give back to our community both here and back home.
